Honoring the Past. Empowering the Present. Shaping the Future.

Welcome to Black History Month at The Lee County Black History Society, a time set aside not as a pause from history, but as a lens that brings its depth into sharper focus.

Black history is American history. It is innovation under pressure, culture forged in resilience, and leadership born from community. Throughout February, we honor the lives, stories, and achievements of African Americans whose contributions continue to shape Lee County, Florida, and the nation.

Why Black History Matters

History doesn’t live in textbooks alone. It lives in neighborhoods, churches, businesses, music, language, and movements. Black History Month exists to correct omissions, amplify voices long ignored, and remind us that progress is neither accidental nor finished.

At The Lee County Black History Society, we see this month as a bridge—connecting generations, inviting dialogue, and turning memory into momentum.

Our Mission During Black History Month

During February and beyond, we commit to:

  • Preserving and sharing the untold stories of Black life in Lee County

  • Educating students, families, and institutions through accessible history

  • Celebrating Black excellence in arts, leadership, science, and entrepreneurship

  • Inspiring civic engagement and cultural pride in future generations

History remembered is power reclaimed.

Featured Programs & Experiences

Throughout Black History Month, the Society hosts and supports events designed to educate, inspire, and connect:

  • Community Lectures & Storytelling – Local historians, elders, and scholars bring lived history to life

  • Youth Education Programs – Interactive workshops that make history tangible and relevant

  • Cultural Exhibits – Artifacts, photographs, and narratives highlighting Black heritage in Lee County

  • Arts & Culture Showcases – Music, spoken word, and visual arts rooted in African American tradition

Each program is an invitation: to listen carefully, think critically, and carry the story forward.

Honoring Local Legacy

National figures matter, but so do neighbors. Black History Month is also about recognizing the teachers, entrepreneurs, activists, veterans, and families who quietly built this community.

Their names may not be in national archives, but their impact is etched into Lee County itself.

How You Can Participate

History grows stronger when shared. You can support Black History Month by:

  • Attending events and bringing family or students

  • Volunteering with the Society

  • Donating to help preserve archives and expand programming

  • Sharing stories, photographs, and family histories with us

Participation is preservation.

Beyond February

Black history does not end on the last day of the month. Our work continues year-round—because remembrance without action is incomplete.

Black History Month is the spark. The Lee County Black History Society is the steady flame.

Celebrate with us.
 Learn with us.
Build with us.

Together, we ensure that the past is not forgotten, and that the future is informed by truth, dignity, and shared humanity.
